Laughton Kora, a performing arts graduate of Toi Whakaari. After beginning to play music from the age of six and appearing in his father’s band on stage until he was 17, he won the Smoke Free Rock Quest and his career in his own right kicked off with a bang. There followed national and international tours with various bands including his own, ‘Kora’. Laughton produced hit single Politician then went on to produce Kora’s releases, EP Volume, KORA & Light Years, before joining with Sleep Deez, Printz Board from Rock Nation Agency in the US and working on Nicki Minaj’s album with the Nation Agency.
More recently Laughton produced Ria Hall’s album (in mastering) and is currently working with Tiki Tane. His performance career has been equally successful, filming series 2 of “Songs From The Inside” with Don McGlashan, Anika Moa and Annie Crummer, appearing in the Billy T James film and TVNZ’s Coverband series, playing ‘Cookie’ in The Forbidden Planet, ‘Judas’ in Jesus Christ Superstar and touring UK, Ireland and Australia with Little Shop of Horrors directed by Oliver Driver. Laughton has been a mentor for the NZ Music Commission since 2007 and travels nationwide to take classes as part of their teaching programme. He is also an itinerant music teacher and has been a drama coach for several Auckland colleges. Recently Laughton directed the live performances for The University of Auckland’s Young Song Writer of the Year Awards and worked alongside The University of Auckland’s School of Music as a lecturer.
Currently directing Masina Returning Home for Touch Compass, a multi-sensory theatre show devised for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, Laughton states he leaves every day with lots of pride and immense creative satisfaction.
