ORO:RESONANCE sound creation programme for disabled rangatahi (young adults)

ORO:RESONANCE is a Touch Compass crip-led, disability-led short-form arts mentorship programme empowering disabled young adult creators through sound and music creation, and performance. An accessible sound design programme for disabled youth in NZ. Participants learn from professionals, create alongside professionals, and witness their work performed live at Basement Theatre Auckland on Friday 24 April. Sound and music creation is led by disabled composer, sound designer and music maker Drew McMillan; with rangatahi-created works supported by the professional dance and performance professionals of Touch Compass, and a young and hungry diverse set of next-generation dancers.

Touch Compass is New Zealand’s leading professional disability-led arts organisation championing accessible arts performance and arts education. We deliver high-quality performances and art activations, youth and community classes, workshops, and professional development.

We champion crip-led, disability-led work, culture, diversity, accessibility, and identity. Touch Compass provides a platform for disabled and non-disabled artists, creatives, choreographers and production personnel to advance their skills and capabilities in arts access; to create, produce and deliver innovative and authentic creative experiences for local, national and international audiences.

Work
Mahi

Our works are disability-led, exceptional professional arts performances and arts activations.

We are multidisciplinary, ranging from dance and movement performances to theatre, digital films, visual arts, festival engagements and site-specific installations. Through our work we explore the intersection of culture and disability, and showcase Te Ao Māori (the Māori world), Va Pasifika (the spirit of Pasifika) and high-quality innovative disability-led performance. Our work can be found in venues throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally.

Education
Mātauranga

Our education classes are fun and engaging, offering a solid foundation of dance, movement and togetherness for our students (tauira).

We provide different offerings at all levels:

  • Creative Class (for rangatahi and teina - youth and young adults) Run on Tuesdays
  • Contemporary Class (for pakeke - adults) - ensure that our creative whānau - disabled and non-disabled - grow together, working towards developing their skills in performance and enhancing social connection. Run on Saturdays
  • Specialist workshops / programmes (for tamariki, rangatahi to pakeke - youth to adult) exploring arts access, disability consciousness and awareness, dance, theatre, movement, mātauranga Māori and Pasifika accessible arts experiences. various dates and locations throughout the year

Our classes have public showings throughout the year that give whānau, friends and family, and community audiences a chance to see first-hand what they've learned. Join a class today!
