♿ IDPD - International Day of Persons with Disabilities

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

All day. Every day. Not just today.

Today, December 3, we honour the rights, well-being, and immense contributions of people with lived experience of disability worldwide. But let’s be clear: accessibility isn’t just for today - it’s every day, for everyone.

Touch Compass Kaiwhakahaere Matua, Jon Tamihere-Kemeys, calls for action to dismantle barriers and ensure equal opportunities in arts, culture, and recreation.

"These aren’t privileges—they’re rights. Disabled creatives are fire! Their talent, vision, and unique worldviews enrich our communities. Yet, physical, attitudinal, and systemic barriers still exclude too many. Genuine access means removing these barriers, fostering access, and investing in a future where disabled people thrive.

IDPD isn’t a photo op or a box to tick. It’s a call to action for decision-makers and influencers to prioritise equity every day. Together, we can make Aotearoa truly accessible—a place where everyone belongs."

Image Description:
In this image we see Rodney Bell sitting in his wheelchair with his arms raised. He is positioned center stage, illuminated by warm lighting that casts a striking shadow of his outstretched arms on the backdrop behind him. Rodney holds a piece of wood in each hand, extending them outward with strength and purpose, creating a powerful silhouette. The stage is minimal, with muted tones, emphasising his presence and expression. The atmosphere conveys emotion, determination, and artistry.
